DEMETHA II

Experimental optimization of the two-stage high load digestion system for manure fermentation and economic-ecological overall evaluation of the innovative process approach (DEMETHA II)

Topic

Currently, approximately one-third of the manure generated by cattle, pig, and poultry farms is utilized in biogas plants, and this leads to issues such as odor, ammonia emissions, and water contamination. This means that the substantial bioenergy potential inherent in both liquid and solid manure remains largely unexploited. The introduction of an innovative two-stage liquid manure fermentation process aims to unlock this untapped potential specifically within small and medium-sized farms. This innovative approach seeks to significantly aid in meeting the energy and climate objectives within the agricultural sector.

Goals

The project aims to experimentally optimize a manure fermentation plant via the DEMETHA process, utilizing a two-stage high-load fermentation method. Beyond technical enhancements, the project focuses on developing cost-effective measurement and control technologies for the new fermentation process. Furthermore, it involves conducting an overall economic and ecological evaluation of the innovative approach, devising an operational strategy to maximize the plant's energy usage, and creating a marketing concept as integral components of the project's objectives.

Tasks of the State Institute

The State Institute plays a pivotal role in the project, encompassing various essential tasks. These tasks include adapting the technical documentation from the initial funding phase, constructing, installing, and commissioning the pilot plant at the research biogas facility, Unterer Lindenhof. The university will also be responsible for rigorous testing of the pilot plant, optimizing the control concept, and systematically varying process parameters. Additionally, they will undertake the vital responsibility of collecting data, conducting long-term tests, meticulously evaluating the processes, and providing scientific monitoring to ensure the project's success and efficacy.
