Promotion of manure fermentation and other agricultural residues in biogas plants to maintain energy production and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in livestock farming and the agricultural sector

Topic

In Baden-Württemberg, only around 25% of the manure produced is currently utilized in biogas plants. Realistically, 50 to 60% of the unused potential could still be utilized.

Goals

The aim of this project is to investigate what potential still exists in biogas plants in order to achieve an increase in the unused proportion. Furthermore, the project aims to find out from the operators why more manure is not used and in which areas of the biogas plant investment is needed. Another question addressed by the project is what contribution agriculture in Baden-Württemberg can make to reducing greenhouse gas emissions if more farm manure is used. Best practice examples show partnerships between biogas plant operators and industry, municipalities and heat users with a high proportion of farm manure.
